Life is NOT a Choice!
I was reading through the BBC again today and I found an article on a 23 year old man who committed suicide. He was a rugby player who had a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. He didn't see any value to the "prison" of his life and so he traveled from the UK to Switzerland to end his life. The article makes it seem that although his parents did not agree with his decision, they did nothing to stop it. And herein lies another one of those great questions: What is the limit of free will?I was 23 once. I made a few stupid decisions that I wish I could undo, but Death is kind of a permanent state. There aren't any "do-overs". How can people be so careless with their lives? I understand that not everyone buys into God. Not everyone can accept that there is a master plan. But even from the perspective of the world, this young man has made a stupid decision and he's set a precedent for other young people who experience life changing injuries. That's not his choice! I know, someone will argue, "But Jason, would you want him to go on and live a miserable life. Would you torture him like that?"--Yes! Yes, I would. There have to be limits. There have to be things that we simply are not allowed to do. This young man has not only committed suicide, he has also committed murder and the worst part about the whole story is that the State, the government, the law of the land said, "That's okay." The young man has made a mistake that he cannot take back. But the state has made a mistake that they have to correct. Life is NOT a choice. How can we abuse it like that? It strikes the core of my very being.
