What Are You Reading?
I was just talking with someone this morning who understood this question better than anyone else I've ever heard. We were talking about the Bible and he said, it doesn't matter who you are or how long you've been reading it, you can read the same verse over and over and it will always have something new for you. He said, the more you read it, the more you gain from it. You grow and change to a deeper understanding. And he's right.
Church isn't just something you do while your kids are little. Religion isn't just an 8-week Bible Study. Your faith is your lifestyle. It's reflected in what books you read, the music you listen to and the TV shows you watch. Think back to the last thing you read. What did it teach you? How did it shape you? Did it make you think? Whether you realize it or not, it probably did. The words we read have a great deal of influence on us. It shapes our personality and our opinions. We react to what we've read.
So what are you reading? Who do you want to be? I've learned that these two questions are very closely related. If you want to be more like your role models, you should start following their example, which includes reading what they read. As followers of Christ, our role model is Jesus. Do you know what he read? --The Old Testament, Holy Scripture, the Scrolls. So now ask yourself...what are you reading?
